It’s all thanks to one derm-approved ingredient you may not be familiar with.

In a previous story, experts told HuffPost about the benefits of lanolin in lip balms, including its ability to penetrate the lips’ moisture barrier and its high fat content, both of which contribute to its lasting hydrating properties. As a byproduct of wool washing, the lanolin used in Lanolips’ products is sourced cruelty-free, and derms agreed that it’s generally safe for use unless you’re allergic to wool (just do a patch test first in case you may be sensitive).

I’ve been known to get the curiosity bug from my colleagues’ recommendations — that’s how I found my favorite vitamin C serum, too — and Flores and I seem to have similar issues with dry, dehydrated skin. So obviously, I added the Lanolips balm to my cart immediately (I opted for the strawberry flavor, but there are plenty of others like watermelon, which Flores owns, peach, minty, banana cream pie and more).

I’d liken the thickness to Vaseline and Glossier’s Balm Dotcom, a comparison other reviews have also made, though most of the flavored Balm Dotcoms have some kind of tint. I prefer having an untinted balm for everyday use that I can layer on top of other lip products if I want a wash of color. (The flavored Lanolips balms are also a couple dollars less than Balm Dotcom.) The formula is less greasy than Vaseline, thankfully, and I don’t find it sticky except in the very first moments after application.

I’m so used to reapplying practically every half hour because the lip balm I’m wearing seems to evaporate (or worse, dry my lips out further). I usually give the Lanolips a minute to absorb, but then I can go for much longer without needing to reach for it again, other than when I eat. I’ve walked around in subzero temperatures with this stuff as a shield on my lips, and felt protected without cracking or discomfort.

As many, many reviews point out, a little goes a long way, so even when I do reapply, I don’t need much. This helped soften my worries about the price, since the tube lasts a long time. “One tube lasted me a year simply by putting it on at night and in the morning,” one person wrote. Another exclaimed, “Reader, I can’t believe ONE TUBE LASTED A WHOLE YEAR. When I bought my tube a year ago, it seemed a little pricey, but averaged out over a year, it’s been a bargain.”

In that previous HuffPost story, dermatologists said lanolin may not be the best for acne-prone skin, since it is an oil-based product. If that’s not you, though, you may get some multi-purpose use out of this. One popular area to apply it is the cuticles. You can also try it out on elbows and other patches of dry skin that need some extra love; you may prefer the original balm for these use cases, since in addition to being colorless it’s also unscented. (None of the flavored versions use artificial fragrance, though, for what it’s worth.)

“After years of trying lip balms/chapsticks/ointments/glosses this one is THE ONE. A little goes a long way. Starts off slightly tacky but soaks in and leaves your lips looking and feeling moisturized and plump. I use it during the day and apply again at night. I love the scent of the watermelon and peach and that it’s a low ingredient least for all the ingredient conscious people! I’ve spent double the amount on products that don’t compare in quality or effectiveness. Just buy it.” —Ashley

“I am a lip balm junkie, I have pocket balm, purse balm, car balm, work balm, you name it i have a lip balm stashed there. This is hands down my favorite lip balm. A little goes a long way, I dont tend to chew it off, and it works to hydrate my lips without feeling like I need more in 5 minutes. It isn’t sticky, and I like the minty tingle.” —chasity

“This stuff saved my life when I was having an issue with a reoccurring rash followed by cracking, extreme dryness, and pain on my upper lip that would not go away for months. After going to a dermatologist, who was no help and told me to only put Vaseline or aquafor on my lips, this instantly eased the dryness, cracking and pain. The dryness cleared up in a week, the rash never returned, and my lips finally went back to normal. You really don’t need to use a lot. Even a year later I’m still only halfway through the tube and this is the only thing I put on my lips. My lips have never been so soft.” —Raina Gately

“This has been my go to product for almost 9 years. I am constantly searching for it all over my house and have to buy so many to make sure that they’re in every single bag. I use this on my children on my lips on my cuticles. I can’t imagine living without this stuff.” —Berkley M.

“This stuff is amazing. It’s thick and super hydrating without feeling sticky and it actually stays on. I use it on my lips every night and wake up soft and smooth. It also works on cuticles dry patches and even as a quick gloss over lipstick. A little goes a long way so the tube lasts forever. Have already repurchased multiple times.” — Ashley Marie
