CNN's Harry Enten Spots Something 'Unusual' About 2028 Democratic Field

CNN’s Harry Enten on Tuesday underscored the lack of a clear frontrunner among potential Democratic candidates for president in 2028, declaring that it’s “very unusual” to encounter. “This is just a downright clown car at this point on the Democratic side,” Enten said. California Gov. Gavin Newsom leads the pack of potential candidates, with 19% of registered Democrats and those leaning toward the party picking him as their top choice to be the nominee, per a recent Yahoo/YouGov survey. Former Vice President Kamala Harris trails just behind him at 18%, a figure that Enten described as “weak” considering she was the nominee in 2024. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg follows at 13%, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) notched 12%. And 19% of voters leaning toward or registered with the party indicated that they’re not sure who they’d rather see as the nominee. “This is just a total clown car. It is a total mess,” he stressed. “There is no clear frontrunner at this particular point on the Democratic side. Who the heck knows who the nominee is going to be in two years?” CNN’s John Berman chimed in, noting that it’s been a “long time” since there’s been a Democratic race like this one. Enten remarked that this is the first time there hasn’t been a potential Democratic candidate hit 25% in early polling since 1992, over three decades ago. In election cycles when there was no incumbent in the race at this point, Al Gore (2000 and 2004), Hillary Clinton (2008 and 2016) and Joe Biden (2020) were all early frontrunners polling at 25% or more. Later in the segment, Enten argued that Americans may be “a little less interested” in Newsom after he started to troll President Donald Trump via a social media campaign last year. Google searches for the California governor dropped by 63% since peaking in August. “There was a lot of interest from Democratic voters, but maybe that interest is waning off just a little bit,” Enten said. “And of course, you don’t necessarily want to wane it off just yet, because I think we still have a lot of time for the votes, right?” H/T: Mediaite By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
