Gavin Newsom Gives Trump Some Advice On His Appearance During SOTU Speech

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) trolled President Donald Trump with a hair-raising dig during his Tuesday State of the Union address in the House chamber. In an X post, Newsom, who made several digs at the commander in chief online as he appeared to watch the address, delivered theatrical revulsion over the disheveled appearance of the 79-year-old president’s hair. “Oh no, Donald,” the Democratic governor, 58, wrote. “You need some of my hair gel!!!” The White House didn’t immediately respond to HuffPost’s requests for comment. Trump hasn’t appeared to respond to the California governor’s jab publicly, but the White House told The Daily Beast in a comment that Newsom “should shut his filthy mouth and apologize to Black people for demeaning them earlier this week.” Newsom was accused of racism and bigotry for comments he made Sunday about his low SAT scores while promoting his new book in a conversation with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. Both Newsom and Dickens pushed back on the claims against the governor, with Newsom calling the complaints “fake fucking outrage.” The White House added in its statement about Newsom: “He should be more concerned about his own appearance — which quite frankly many people have serious questions about — instead of talking about others.” Newsom has often mocked the president’s brash style on social media and has trolled his looks as well. As to why he’s made it his business to contend Trump on social media, Newsom told NPR Tuesday that he’s “putting a mirror up to President Trump” and “fighting fire with fire.” “I am punching a bully back in the mouth,” he added. Meanwhile, Trump has centered conversations around his hair over the years, including repeatedly swearing that his hair is real and not a wig and divulging the precise way he combs his strands during his tedious hair care regimen. Trump previously reprimanded Time magazine for making his hair “disappear” on its October 2025 cover, calling the outlet’s photo choice “really weird” in a Truth social post.
