The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) said the crash occurred at 7:20 a.m. local time on Friday, Feb. 20, on Highway 378 in Lexington County, according to WIS and FOX affiliate WACH. A Ford pickup truck and a Nissan SUV were traveling on opposite sides of the highway when the Ford hit the Nissan as the SUV was turning left onto Spring Hill Road, troopers said. The Ford then struck a Cadillac SUV, which was turning right onto the highway. The driver of the Nissan — identified as Michele Guarino, according to CBS affiliate WLTX — was transported to Prisma Health Richland after the crash. She died three days later on Monday, Feb. 23. SCHP did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. Marissa Guarino, Michele's sister, said her sister sustained “catastrophic brain injuries” in the crash and was put on life support before she died, according to a message on GoFundMe. She was 42 years old and leaves behind two teenage daughters. “I am comforted in believing it happened so quickly that she did not know what occurred and did not suffer,” Marissa wrote on the fundraiser. “For that, I am grateful. But her absence will be felt deeply and permanently within our family.” Before she learned what happened to her sister, Marissa told WLTX she got a notification on her phone that there had been a serious accident. She and her husband went to the scene, only to see her sister’s car had been involved. “When we get there, we see it is her car. It’s totaled. The front of it is smashed. The airbags went off inside the car,” she recalled. Family said Michele donated her organs to five people, according to WLTX. “She always had such empathy when she heard tragic stories like this,” Marissa said. “Saving other lives so that other people don’t have to go through this.” Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. More than $167,000 has been raised through the GoFundMe for Michele’s daughters, with donations going toward “protecting their future and ensuring they have the support, resources, and opportunities Michele would have worked tirelessly to give them.” “No child should have to lose a parent this young,” Marissa wrote. “While we cannot take away their pain, we can stand beside them and help carry forward the life Michele envisioned for her babies.” Read the original article on People
