The screen giants shaded each other back and forth in the tabloids, including this famous quip by Bette about Joan, "[Crawford] slept with every male star at MGM — except Lassie." 

According to Harper's Bazaar, when the pair worked together for Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, the drama continued behind the scenes. In a scene where Bette's character drags Joan's body, allegedly, the actor made herself as heavy as possible and filled her "pockets with rocks" (or wore a "weightlifter's belt") knowing Bette had a bad back.
