KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A historic Tudor Revival that has sat for nearly a century off one of Kansas City’s most famous and picturesque parkways has been approved for demolition. Built in 1930 on a quiet, 0.6-acre corner lot in the Sunset Hill neighborhood, the stately William S. Rawlings house is in its final days after 96 years of Kansas City’s unpredictable weather, new and rotating homeowners, and other factors that, over time, take a toll on a historic structure. Worlds of Fun sold: Kansas City amusement park among seven included in $342M deal According to the Kansas City Star, the owners of the property filed with the city early this year for the necessary permits to tear down the home and build a new structure in its place. They claim that the home, which is estimated on Zillow to be worth about $1.3 million, has had numerous issues since they purchased it 13 years ago, leading to costly repairs. Because the home is more than 50 years old, it is subject to review by the Kansas City Historic Preservation Commission, which requires the homeowners wait 45 days after filing for demolition to allow the commission to discuss and review the property. From there, the commission decides if the home is approved for demolition or if the owners must preserve the historic structure — a structure that city officials say is a great example of the Tudor Revival style of architecture. However, on Feb. 27, the day the commission was scheduled to discuss the house, not enough members were present at the meeting, and it was canceled. As a result, the Star reported that on Monday, the city officially gave the homeowners permission to move ahead with the demolition process as the 45-day period had lapsed. 150 new heart sculptures to be installed across Kansas City metro next month Now, the Mercier Street home, which was eligible to be added to the National Register of Historic Places, will soon be torn down, and a new structure will be in its place. According to the Star’s reporting, the homeowners plan to build a home that honors the style of the original 3,000-square-foot property, complete with historic and modern Tudor Revival elements. FOX4 reached out to the developers to learn more about the property; however, they have yet to respond. According to city records, there was no public opposition to demolishing the house, and work is already underway to tear it down and rebuild it soon. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
