Strong cold front barreling toward Texas to drop temperatures by 55 degrees

It may be unseasonably hot in Texas right now, but a strong cold front barreling toward the Lone Star State will send temperatures nosediving. Many cities will see temperatures drop more than 30 degrees in mere hours and remain cooler for a couple of days, bringing some relief from what feels like an early summer. From Dalhart to Dallas and down to San Antonio, cooler days are on the horizon. A weekend cold front should cut back those nearly triple-digit highs over the weekend and into early next week. "Another strong trough will swing through the Northern Plains late this week and send a cold front southward on Friday," the Dallas-Fort Worth National Weather Service office warns. "This should knock several degrees off of high temperatures Friday into next weekend." The Texas Panhandle will see the most shocking changeup. After several afternoons in the mid- to high-90s, the region will see a shocking 55-degree temperature plummet Thursday, March 26. Amarillo will drop from 99 degrees that afternoon to a much chillier 44 overnight. Further north, in Dalhart, a 96-degree afternoon will cool to a nearly freezing night at 35 degrees. It'll spell a sunny but cooler weekend for the northern cities of Texas. The weekend highs should hover in the 60s and 70s, with evenings dipping down into the upper-20s to mid-30s. Dalhart should even see freezing temperatures again Friday night. This cold front should reach North Texas, namely the DFW, by Thursday night. The metro area will dip nearly 30 degrees between Thursday night and afternoon, plummeting from 91 to 64 degrees. By Saturday, temperature gauges in North Texas should barely exceed 70 degrees at the hottest, and a mild weekend is in store. It'll take a bit longer for this burst of arctic air to reach South and Central Texas. San Antonio should see a serious cool down by Friday night, when a week of 90-degree days will drastically dip into the 50s overnight. Then the weekend highs should hover in the mid- to upper-50s. Evenings will continue to be a bit chilly in the mid-50s through the start of the next work week. "By Friday, a cold front is forecast to push across the local area. Temperatures are forecast to be cooler in the wake of the front," the National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio office predicts. "Much cooler for Saturday in the wake of the front with 60s and 70s areawide." This article originally published at Strong cold front barreling toward Texas to drop temperatures by 55 degrees.
