Whether you're looking for a traditional liquid or an easy-breezy stick formula, these mineral sunscreens have you covered and protected.

The sunscreen aisle these days is overwhelming. It's even more so if you have sensitive skin. Do I want a stick sunscreen, a traditional liquid, a spray, and what's the difference between chemical and mineral?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), mineral sunscreens (also called physical sunscreens) are the best option for sensitive skin. These formulas use titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide to provide a barrier that sits on top of the skin to reflect UV rays (chemical formulas absorb UV rays and convert them into heat). Because mineral sunscreens tend to be a bit heavier than chemical sunscreens, they can leave behind a white cast that doesn't blend well into deeper skin tones. For deeper skin tones, a tinted formula can help minimize the appearance of a white cast.

The AAD also recommends opting for formulas with an SPF 30 or higher, which will block 97% of the sun's UVB rays. Higher SPFs can block even more, but keep in mind that a high SPF does not equal a longer wear time! No matter the SPF, it's always recommended to reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, and after swimming and sweating.

With this in mind, keep scrolling to find the best mineral sunscreens for sensitive skin.

Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Liquid Mineral Sunscreen is a perfect all-arounder that features an impressive SPF 70 packed into a lightweight formula that's meant to absorb super quickly while leaving behind a sheer, matte finish — and the under-$20 price tag is just the cherry on top.

Promising review: "As a redhead with old, sensitive skin, I’ve used a lot of sunscreen products. This is one of my faves. It’s a thin, creamy liquid. The bottle is small, but a little bit covers well. It's white and stays on the surface of your skin while applying just long enough to see if you have good coverage. No irritation, no problem when sweating, no sunburn." —T. J.

I also love wearing natural full-beat looks so I need something that provides hydration but doesn’t peel under my makeup. I also love, love a glowy base that I can just wear no makeup. I have tried so many products and have never been able to find something that works. Now THIS is gorgeous!! I’m pretty tan, and the tint that this provides is very pretty; it’s super dewy and provides so much hydration. I have layered with many products and have never noticed any pilling or problems. Promising review: "This is the best tinted sunscreen I have ever tried. It comes out of the bottle in a dark tan, but it somehow manages to blend into many skin tones (I’m very pale and white). It makes me look as if I have no visible makeup or sunscreen on, but it evens out my skin tone so perfectly that its no-makeup quality acts like the best makeup. I will sometimes throw a little bronzer on top of Anthelios Tinted Sunscreen for contouring, but that isn’t wholly necessary because another nice thing about the finish is that it doesn’t make you look unnaturally blank, with your face in a single solid color, as foundation alone usually does." —Professor R.
