Rain, mountain snow to break Boise’s warm streak. When will temperatures drop?

Here’s some good news if you’re headed to Boise’s Treefort Music Fest. The City of Trees should be sunny and warm all weekend long, according to the National Weather Service. “Record or near-record high temperatures are possible through Monday, particularly in southern and central Idaho, with afternoon highs reaching 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal normals,” the weather service said in its most recent Idaho state forecast discussion. However, the unseasonably warm weather will likely end early next week. Here’s what to expect: “A significant pattern shift begins late Monday as a strong Pacific cold front moves through, ushering in much cooler temperatures and widespread precipitation for the remainder of the week,” the state forecast said. As the cold front sweeps the state, Southern Idaho could see wind gusts of more than 40 mph as well as significant snow at elevations above 6,000 feet. Strong gusts are anticipated to hit on Wednesday through Thursday, according to Josh Smith, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boise office. “This transition will bring an end to the record warmth, returning the state to a cooler and more active spring weather pattern,” the weather service said. According to Smith, Boise will see about a half-inch of precipitation over the course of the week as temperatures drop. “It does get quite a bit cooler,” the meteorologist told the Idaho Statesman via phone. “We might actually be below normal (temperatures).” The storm is moving in from Alaska, Smith said, bringing colder air along with it. With Bogus Basin resort closed for ski season, Idaho mountains will have a chance to add several inches of snow at higher elevations, Smith said. “We could see almost a foot of snow up on the peaks,” the forecaster said. According to the National Weather Service’s latest seven-day forecast for Boise, Friday, March 27, was expected to be sunny with a high temperature around 68 degrees and an overnight low of 41 degrees. The temperature will jump to 74 degrees on Saturday, before dropping to 46 overnight. Sunday will welcome an overcast sky with a high around 75 and an overnight low of 48. On Monday, the high will sink back down to 68, with a 20% chance of precipitation. The chance for rain increases to 50% overnight, when the low will be near 44. On Tuesday, the high will be around 61 with a 40% chance of precipitation all day. The overnight low will be 43. The chance for showers increases to 60% on Wednesday with a high close to 62 and an overnight low of 38 expected. On Wednesday night, there’s a 70% chance of rain.
