We Cannot Tell A Lie: George Washington 'Hamilton' Actor Flubbed National Anthem

Christopher Jackson, who played George Washington in the original cast of the Broadway musical hit “Hamilton,” made the wrong kind of history on opening day Thursday for the New York Mets. He forgot the words and repeated a verse while singing the national anthem at Citi Field. Jackson omitted “O’er the ramparts we watched” and re-sang “What so proudly we hailed” before getting back on course. 😬 "Hamilton" star messes up the National Anthem at the Mets' Opening Day game.Credit: X / Mets pic.twitter.com/k5o1taAh2F Viewer reaction ranged from understanding to complimentary to harsh to accusatory. Another lightly made fun of the star. “He definitely threw away his shot today,” someone wrote, referring to the song “My Shot” from the play. Craig Carton of WFAN sports radio even fretted the muff might have cursed the Mets’ season. “How does George Washington mess up singing the anthem. Uh oh. Might be a long season in Queens. Let’s go Mets,” he wrote. Even if it wasn’t a star-spangled performance for Jackson, the home team still beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 11-7. Jackson sang the anthem without a hitch at a 2015 Mets playoff game and recently aced it at a Carolina Panthers NFL playoff game in January. But opening day jitters can be real. Besides, the real George Washington died in 1799, 15 years before Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” — so he wouldn’t have known the lyrics at all.
