This week in TV and movie news, “Practical Magic 2” finally has a trailer, two shows and two movies you really should watch this weekend, and much more.

As a Senior Talent Booker and Producer at BuzzFeed, you can typically catch me flailing about the buzziest TV shows and movies.

Streaming on HBO Max; new episodes every Thursday

Hacks has returned for its final season, and with only two episodes out, it’s already one of the best TV seasons this year. With Season 5, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) are picking up the pieces after their stint on late night. With Deborah banned from performing stand-up until her contract expires, they are doing everything else to stay relevant as they try to secure Deborah’s biggest show yet: a stand-up set at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Like previous seasons, Jean and Hannah are so hilariously brilliant together. They continue to prove that they are the best comedy duo on TV right now.

With this being the final season, there’s also a twinge of sadness laced throughout these episodes, where you’ll be hysterically laughing one minute and then sobbing over a heartfelt moment the next. That’s just how good this show is. Also, the ensemble cast is just a chef’s kiss. Like The Office, Parks and Rec, Modern Family, and Veep, we are watching an iconic and enduring comedy series unfold in real time, and you definitely don’t want to miss out on being able to say you watched it live.

Running Point is back for a second season, and this is once again a really fun binge-watch. This season, Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) is no longer the surprise choice to lead the LA Waves, but now she’s the one everyone is watching. With her brother Cam (Justin Theroux) back, Isla needs to figure out how to bring a championship home and keep proving how great she is at this job because Cam is just waiting for a misstep.

Like Season 1, Running Point continues to be a fun turn-off-your-brain comedy series that hinges on the ensemble cast of great comedic actors, in particular the Gordon family and Brenda Song’s Ali. One of the things I miss the most is The CW, and the shows it gave us, and the highest compliment I can give Running Point is that it feels like those types of shows that I miss. It’s a quick binge-watch, and it’s got a cast that genuinely seems like they love getting to work together. Plus, Kate Hudson continues to be an icon, so should there really be any other selling point than that?!

If you’re looking for a fun teen comedy to watch this weekend, may I suggest Roommates? The movie follows Devon (Sadie Sandler), an introverted high school senior who is hoping to make more friends and be just a little popular in college. When she attends freshman orientation and meets Celeste (Chloe East), it seems like her prayers have been answered. However, once they arrive on campus, the perfect roommate friendship Devon dreamed of seems to be just that, a dream. Suddenly, Devon is finding Celeste’s behavior increasingly suspicious, and now she’s wondering if her random roommate might not be the friend she always wanted.

Both Sadie and Chloe are great in this comedy that really puts what could go wrong during your freshman year of college front and center. Chloe is a real standout in a role that I can only describe as spiritually Regina George’s daughter. She’s great at playing a mean girl (complimentary). Alongside this duo, it’s a great cast of comedic heavy hitters, including Nick Kroll, Natasha Lyonne, Sarah Sherman, and more. Again, it’s a great quick watch and one of the better Netflix teen comedy movies that has come out. In fact, Sadie’s other Netflix movie, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, which she stars in with both her dad and sister, is also great!

Mother Mary kicks off what I am dubbing the year of Anne Hathaway. By the time 2026 ends, Anne will have starred in six new movies, and it all starts with this A24 movie. Written and directed by David Lowery, the movie follows iconic pop star Mother Mary (Hathaway), whose long-buried wounds suddenly resurface when she reunites with her estranged BFF and former costume designer, Sam (Michaela Coel), on the eve of her comeback performance. No surprise, but Anne and Michaela are sensational together in a movie that I can only imagine will become a cult favorite.

Both Anne and David drew inspiration from Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour and Beyoncé when crafting the movie and the character of Mother Mary. I feel like this is a movie you will either LOVE or leave wishing it started a little stronger and was a little more fleshed out. Overall, the concept is sensational, and it’s always great to watch Anne sing. Mother Mary also includes original songs written by Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA twigs.

There are a ton of movie sequels getting made these days, and some of these movies don’t even need sequels, IMO. So, it got me thinking about which movies I genuinely believe NEED a sequel, and two films immediately came to mind. The first one is The Nice Guys. If there is one Ryan Gosling movie that deserves a sequel, it’s this one. He and Russell Crowe are so great together as March and Healy, a private eye and an enforcer, who investigate the apparent suicide of a porn star. Everyone has been campaigning for this movie to get a sequel, and even Ryan has weighed in. PLEASE. I BEG.

The second movie that actually deserves a sequel is Crazy Rich Asians. The sequel has been stalled for years now, and it’s such a bummer because the second book in the trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend, is my favorite one. The sequel was set to follow Astrid (Gemma Chan) and Charlie (Harry Shum Jr.). Again, PLEASE. I BEG. The world deserves this one, too.
