Every Single Senate Democrat To Come Out In Support Of Abortion Pill

The entire Senate Democratic caucus will introduce a resolution Thursday asserting that the abortion pill mifepristone is safe and effective ahead of a Supreme Court ruling that could threaten access across the country. The resolution, shared exclusively with HuffPost, states that “over 25 years of real-world evidence and hundreds of peer-reviewed studies [prove] that mifepristone is safe and effective should be respected.” Although the resolution is not binding, it’s a formal expression of all 45 Democratic senators’ opinion on the ongoing attacks against mifepristone, one of two abortion pills that anti-choice lawmakers and advocates have set their sights on since the repeal of Roe v. Wade. The caucus includes 45 Democratic senators and two Independents. A federal appeals court handed down a decision in Louisiana v. FDA on May 1 that temporarily banned the mailing of mifepristone and required that the abortion pill be distributed only in person and at clinics. The Supreme Court issued a stay on the ruling three days later, restoring access last week. Senate Democrats’ resolution comes hours before the high court’s stated deadline for the extended stay on Thursday at 5 p.m. Eastern. “We should not be one court ruling away from millions of women losing access to safe, effective medication that the FDA approved over two decades ago,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), the resolution lead, told HuffPost. “While Republicans use junk science to try to march us toward a full-on nationwide abortion ban, Democrats will not stop fighting to protect reproductive freedom for women everywhere.” The Senate co-leads on the resolution are Sens. Tammy Baldwin (Wis.), Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), Ron Wyden (Ore.), Patty Murray (Wash.) and Tina Smith (Minn.) — all of whom have been very outspoken on the importance of abortion care access. “While Republicans use junk science to try to march us toward a full-on nationwide abortion ban, Democrats will not stop fighting to protect reproductive freedom for women everywhere.” Abortion pills sent by mail ― a combination of mifepristone and another drug, misoprostol ― account for nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. If the Supreme Court lifts the stay, effectively allowing a ban on the mailing of mifepristone, it would be a significant step toward a national abortion ban — impacting patients in both pro- and anti-abortion rights states. Since the Supreme Court repealed federal abortion protections, anti-abortion politicians and advocates have launched several lawsuits against the Food and Drug Administration in an attempt “to use misinformation about mifepristone to justify restricting access to this essential medication nationwide, despite its longstanding safety record,” the resolution states. Republicans and anti-abortion groups have been laying the groundwork to undermine the safety of mifepristone for over a year, basing many of their claims on a junk science report that is not peer-reviewed. The report was published by an anti-abortion think tank that is an advisory board member of Project 2025, an extreme right-wing policy agenda that details how to ban abortion nationwide, including by restricting or banning mifepristone with the help of Trump appointees in the FDA. Despite anti-abortion claims, mifepristone and misoprostol are more than 95% effective and pose fewer risks than Tylenol. Over 100 studies have corroborated their safety and effectiveness. “Few drugs have been studied so extensively after their FDA approval and few hold such an explicit and convincing safety record as mifepristone,” the resolution states. If the Supreme Court effectively bans the mailing of mifepristone, abortion providers told HuffPost last week that patients will still be able to get abortion pills by mail using a misoprostol-only regimen.
