Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) said in a recent interview that he is “pretty much locked and loaded” in his support of the U.S. war against Iran.

“Something like this is much more important than just voting what your base might demand. Because I think things are much bigger and more important than that. And Iran with a nuclear bomb is one of those things,” Fetterman told Semafor in an interview published Monday, discussing opposition to legislation to end President Trump’s war with Iran.

Shortly after the war began, Fetterman said he was “baffled” by some of his fellow senators not backing the U.S. military action against Iran.

“Every member in the U.S. Senate agrees we cannot allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon,” Fetterman said in a post on the social platform X in March.

“I’m baffled why so many are unwilling to support the only action to achieve that. Empty sloganeering vs. commitment to global security — which is it?” he asked.

Democratic lawmakers are close to passing a resolution to end Trump’s war with Iran, with some help from Republicans.

Resolutions under the 1973 War Powers Act, in the House and Senate, saw more members of Trump’s party last week joining Democrats to vote in favor of the measures.

Last Wednesday, three Republican senators voted to advance a Democratic-sponsored resolution under the War Powers Act to stop the U.S. war with Iran unless Congress authorizes further military action. The motion to discharge the resolution from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee failed by a vote of 49-50.

Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against advancing the resolution.

There has been notable discontent from the American public toward the war with Iran, with most American registered voters saying Trump made the wrong choice to begin a military offensive against the Middle Eastern country in a new poll from The New York Times/Siena College.

Amid the war, the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for the oil industry, has been closed, causing oil and gas prices to spike. According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. was about $4.52 on Monday afternoon.
