Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) got gumbo on his face during an uninvited visit to Greenland, according to The New York Times.

Landry, President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the semiautonomous Arctic island, was strolling through the capital city of Nuuk on Sunday when one resident gave him the finger, the newspaper reported. But that wasn’t the worst indignity he suffered, apparently.

“After he offered some MAGA hats to Greenlandic children, several shook their heads,” the Times wrote.

There were other signs that Landry’s diplomatic visit wasn’t fully connecting.

In an exchange caught on video, Landry also asked a child if he wanted to take a picture of him. “No,” the youngster seemed to reply.

The state leader even resorted to trying to win over youngsters with the promise of baked goods.

“If you come to Louisiana and you come to the governor’s mansion, [you can have] all the chocolate chip cookies you can eat,” he said in another clip making the rounds.

That might have crumbled the mood of Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who has continually pushed back at Trump’s threats to wrest ownership of Greenland from Denmark.

“We have our red lines,” Nielsen said on Danish TV, per NOLA.com. “And no matter how many chocolate cookies we get, we are not going to change them.”

The Times reported that Landry’s response was, “There’s only one line and it’s red, white and blue.”

After meeting with Landry, Nielsen told reporters on Monday: “We believe there is progress, and from Greenland’s side we are focused on finding a solution that is good for us all, and most importantly that threats of annexation, takeover or a purchase of Greenland and the Greenlandic people does not occur.”

Denmark’s leadership has remained firm despite Trump’s insistence that the U.S. annex or control Greenland for defense purposes.

Landry put a sunny spin on the chilly reception he got.

“I just want to come here and make a lot of friends,” he told Danish TV, per Euractiv.

White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said Landry is in Greenland to strengthen ties with the territory.

“The United States is optimistic that we are on a good trajectory to address U.S. national security interests in Greenland,” Wales told HuffPost via email. “Governor Landry is doing a great job and is a strong asset to the world-class team that President Trump has put together to pursue long-term peace both at home and abroad.”

The governor’s office did not immediately respond to a HuffPost request for comment.
