Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard is resigning from her position next month, citing a family emergency.

“Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026,” Gabbard wrote to President Donald Trump in a letter shared to social media. “My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”

“At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle,” she wrote, calling her husband her “rock.”

The letter was first reported by Fox News. Trump confirmed Gabbard’s resignation Friday afternoon in a Truth Social post, writing that she had done “a great job” and wished to spend more time with “her wonderful husband ... bringing him back to good health as they currently fight a tough battle together.”

“I have no doubt he will soon be better than ever,” Trump said.

He added that “Tulsi has done an incredible job, and we will miss her.”

Gabbard — who once wanted to be the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee — was confirmed to her position in February 2025 following months of debate about her qualifications.

She was criticized for her lack of experience in the intelligence field, her repeated spreading of pro-Russia conspiracy theories and her support of now-deposed Syrian President Bashar Assad.

As director, Gabbard falsely claimed former President Barack Obama’s administration orchestrated a “yearslong coup and treasonous conspiracy” to undermine Trump.

In March, as Trump bombarded Iran, Gabbard was unable to answer whether Iran had posed an “imminent” threat to the United States before the U.S. launched missile strikes against Tehran.

“The only person who can determine what is and is not an imminent threat is the president,” Gabbard told lawmakers at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing.

Trump said Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, Aaron Lukas, will replace Gabbard as acting director.
