The quote was a perfect companion to his previous hints about shrugging off struggling Americans. Specifically, the president's dizzying "I don't think about Americans’ financial situation" comment from last month.

"They can live on a tortilla, a broccoli spear, and a serving of chicken, just like the government they elected suggests they do."
