(NewsNation) — A sheriff from Louisiana is resigning from his position of nearly 10 years after pleading guilty to charges related to an attack at a local restaurant.

Former St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith pled guilty to felony second-degree battery and misdemeanor disturbing the peace by public intoxication during a recent court appearance.

Court documents obtained by NewsNation local affiliate WGNO show that on May 29, Smith approached Bobby Couvillion, a podcaster who was a frequent critic of Smith, and grabbed him and pulled him to the ground, where he repeatedly hit him.

Couvillion was hospitalized with a concussion after the attack and also had dental injuries.

Smith was sentenced to two years of supervised probation and is also required to complete a “specialty court program that is expected to last between 15 and 18 months.” He also agreed to resign as sheriff as part of his plea deal.

His last day was Wednesday. According to local news outlet WWLTV, Smith was sworn in as sheriff in July of 2016.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve this community,” Smith said in part in a statement. “I am proud to leave this agency stronger than when I was elected. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the dedication and professionalism of the men and women of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.”

“Thank you for the trust and support you have given me throughout my career. Serving the people of St. Tammany Parish has been the greatest honor of my professional life,” Smith continued.

Couvillion also issued a statement, saying he was “grateful that the truth came to light and that justice was not swept under the rug simply because of who was involved. No one – regardless of their position or title – should be able to use force against an innocent person without consequence. This outcome sends that message clearly.”
