(NewsNation) — Fighter jets intercepted a plane that entered restricted airspace Tuesday over Geneva, Ohio, where President Donald Trump was attending an event, military officials said.

F-16 fighter jets used flares to alert the pilot after the plane violated a temporary flight restriction, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

The interception occurred Tuesday around 6:15 p.m. ET. The civilian aircraft was safely escorted out of the restricted airspace.

NORAD said the flares are designed with safety in mind, "burn out quickly and completely, and pose no danger to people on the ground." Officials noted they may have been visible from the ground.

The temporary flight restriction was issued by the Federal Aviation Administration as Trump traveled to Ohio to attend the 2026 Patriot Games, a youth athletic tournament backed by the White House.

The incident comes days after NORAD fighter jets intercepted planes over Bedminster, New Jersey, where Trump owns a golf course. Two general aviation aircraft violated temporary flight restrictions Sunday and were safely escorted out of the restricted airspace.

Officials said the restrictions are intended to protect airspace around sensitive locations and major events.

Last month, fighter jets intercepted multiple planes attempting to fly in temporarily restricted airspace over Bedminster and East Rutherford, N.J. NORAD said flares were deployed to get the attention of two pilots. 

The interceptions occurred while international leaders and celebrities gathered in East Rutherford for the World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium. 

The FAA issues temporary flight restrictions for a variety of reasons, including major events involving high-profile political figures. Pilots are notified of the restrictions through Notices to Airmen, or NOTAMs, and NORAD and the FAA urged pilots to check those notices before flying.
