The Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), continued to misrepresent the views of his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed.

“You can almost hear a collective gasp across Michigan for all the things he spends time hating on,” Rogers told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday. “I mean, when I go back, I want to make sure we’re protecting our faith and our families and our factories and our freedoms, while he’s advocating doing away with our fireworks, football, the Fourth of July.”

While El-Sayed, in a now-deleted YouTube video, did advocate for eliminating fireworks from Fourth of July celebrations due to the negative effects they can have on veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, children, and pets, the accuracy of Rogers’ claims stop there.

Rogers’ comments likely stem from a recent CNN report that dug into more of El-Sayed’s past remarks, but nowhere in that report did he suggest “doing away” with the Fourth of July as the former congressman suggested.

With regard to the football claims, El-Sayed questioned, in another now-deleted YouTube video, whether the sport could ever be “ethical” or “safe.” He also linked the sport’s “ethos” to narratives used to justify slavery and westward expansion, according to the CNN report.

El-Sayed’s campaign told CNN that the old clips do not reflect his current views on football or the Fourth of July.

“Abdul is the former captain of his high school football team, loves Michigan football on Saturdays, and celebrates the Fourth of July with fireworks like the next Michigander. Cherry-picked comments from old podcasts don’t reflect his beliefs today,” the campaign said in a statement.
