The general election field is set in Alaska's wide-open race to replace term-limited Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R).

More than a dozen candidates were running in Tuesday's open primary, from which the top four vote-getters advance to a ranked-choice general election.

Democratic former state Sen. Tom Begich was leading the gubernatorial field in polling ahead of the primary. His nephew, Rep. Nick Begich III (R), is notably running for reelection to the House as a Republican.

But Democratic former state Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins led Begich and Republican businesswoman Bernadette Wilson. The trio advanced to the general election with nearly 22 percent, 20 percent and about 10 percent of the vote, respectively, as of Wednesday morning. A fourth candidate as yet to advance as of 8 a.m. EDT.

Cook Political Report considers this year's gubernatorial race as "likely Republican." The election handicapper shifted the contest a step away from the solidly red column in April, citing "ranked-choice complexities," Dunleavy's lackluster approval rating and a "convoluted free-for-all" after former Rep. Mary Peltola (D) opted to run for Senate instead of governor.

"Democrats have plenty of work to do to prove they have a shot at a governorship they last won in 1998, but a competitive general election is within the realm of possibility," Cook Political Report's Matthew Klein wrote back in April.
