Meghan McCain intentionally stoked a debate online among fellow Republicans this week after sharing an eyebrow-raising take on the physical appearances of women currently being elevated to public roles within the GOP.

The former “View” co-host and daughter of late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) shared a post on X Monday in which she urged the Republican Party to shift its emphasis away from women who have undergone cosmetic procedures she perceived as “bizarre” and “botched.”

“I’m going to say something spicy that’s going to piss a lot of you of,” she wrote. “Republicans really need to elevate and highlight more women in our party who have NOT had bizarre or botched plastic surgery that is both distracting and made a mockery all over the internet.”

I’m going to say something spicy that’s going to piss a lot of you off…Republicans really need to elevate and highlight more women in our party who have NOT had bizarre or botched plastic surgery that is both distracting and made a mockery all over the internet.

By Wednesday morning, McCain’s post had drawn a flurry of divisive comments, some of which were in agreement.

“This isn’t a Republican problem, it’s clearly a Trump Admin issue. Mar-A-Lago Face some call it,” one person wrote.

Added another: “I don’t agree with Meghan McCain on much, but she isn’t totally wrong here.”

Others, however, suggested McCain should direct her criticism of the Republican Party elsewhere.

“I have no opinion on how women present themselves, but I think this reflects a broader tendency in conservative culture to naturalize narrow definitions of beauty and attach judgments about character and respectability to personal appearance,” one person wrote. “Real change would address that.”

After one X user attacked her appearance directly, McCain fired back: “I may be chunky and I may be middle aged but no one is doing entire tik tok videos speculating I’m an alien or skin walker.”

McCain notably didn’t single out any GOP women by name.

The criticisms of “Mar-a-Lago face” ― which alludes to President Donald Trump’s Florida estate ― have been directed at a number of high-ranking female Republicans. Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Kimberly Guilfoyle, who last week resigned as U.S. ambassador to Greece, are among those who have been accused of having undergone plastic surgery and other cosmetic interventions.

Similarly, a Mother Jones article published last week analyzed the appearance of White House press secretary Katie Zacharia, who has since been ousted. In it, the outlet suggested Zacharia had met the “unspoken but essential qualifications” for a high-profile role in the Trump administration, including a passing resemblance to first daughter Ivanka Trump, with whom the president “has long appeared to be infatuated.”

While women have sadly drawn the brunt of the criticism, Politico recently outlined cosmetic procedures that have been “booming” among conservative men in Washington, D.C., since Trump’s 2024 election win. The article, published in June of last year, singled out tech billionaire Elon Musk and former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as among those speculated to have gone under the knife.
