“We can literally see in real time how hearing all of that racist abuse deflated her energy... It’s enraging and exhausting, and I’m so tired for all of us.” As a Celebrity Reporter, I cover everything from fashion and award shows to TV, film, and cultural conversations. The woman went on to shout “Blackie,” which is an offensive slur that dates back to the 1800s. Coco Jones ignored a racist hater who randomly yelled insults at her while she was posing for a shoot in New York City pic.twitter.com/yHWPC9XjtR “It's exhausting being a black woman, can never just live in peace,” another user wrote. “I believe that one of the ways people attempt to diminish us or reinforce their own prejudices is by deliberately provoking a reaction. They make racist or inflammatory comments, hoping to elicit a response that they can then use to justify their preconceived notions about us. I know some may disagree, but that’s one of the reasons I’m very deliberate about how I respond to racism. My responses are generally controlled and measured, not because I don’t feel the anger or frustration, but because I refuse to give someone the satisfaction of using my reaction to reinforce their prejudice,” someone said. One more user added, “Black people, especially Black women, can’t even exist anymore without some entitled white person spewing vile at them, bothering them and invading their personal space. As a Latina who’s been on the receiving end of some white person’s ‘I’m calling ICE’ ‘go back to where you came from,’ I’m so exhausted and angry. I’m tired of us having to smile, be strong, or being told to take ‘the high road.’” Some comments and responses have been edited for length/clarity.
