(NewsNation) — The Justice Department says it's monitoring polling sites in four Michigan cities during Tuesday's state primary. The department's Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney's offices for both Michigan districts are watching for compliance with federal voting laws in Detroit, Hamtramck, Lansing and East Lansing. "Our primary monitoring efforts continue today as we seek to ensure free and fair elections nationwide," Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division said in a statement. Michigan primary election results 2026 "This initiative is aimed at promoting transparency and an open flow of communication between poll observers and election monitors," the statement read. The monitoring comes as Michigan holds one of the most closely watched primaries of the day. Democrats are choosing between progressive Abdul El-Sayed and establishment-backed Haley Stevens for the Senate nomination, in a race that's become a proxy fight over the party's direction.
