Stephen Colbert's Big Emmys Ask Just Got Answered Ahead Of This Year's Ceremony

Stephen Colbert asked the Emmys crowd last year to get his writers another gig after “The Late Show” ended. And now they’re getting one by working on this year’s ceremony with Emmys host Mariska Hargitay. Hargitay broke the news in an interview Tuesday with Deadline, telling the outlet that they’re in the “beginning stages” and “throwing out a lot of different ideas” for the award show when it takes place Sept. 14. “I’m working with an incredible team of writers. ... We’ve been meeting a lot and discussing a lot and pitching a lot of ideas. We’re pitching so many ideas.” The “Law & Order: SVU” star — who has been nominated eight times for her role on the show and once won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series — teased one such idea that humorously plays off her hit show. The writers will take part in the ceremony roughly a year after Colbert, following a standing ovation while presenting at the 2025 Emmys, used the big moment to highlight the effects of CBS pulling the plug on “The Late Show.” “While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?” he asked. “Because I’ve got 200 very well-qualified candidates with me here tonight who will be available in June.” His show won the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series that same night. While CBS has insisted that it’s decision to cancel “The Late Show” was due to “purely financial reasons,” many viewers have suspected that political pressure played a role in the network — whose parent company, Paramount, has a Trump-aligned CEO at the helm — wiping the award-winning program off the air. In June, about a month after Colbert’s final episode in the Ed Sullivan Theater, writer Felipe Torres Medina took to social media to slam CBS for not sharing an award show campaign for “The Late Show” at the time. He included a “For Your Consideration” video that the team made for “purely financial reasons.” Such videos have previously been shared on the show’s official YouTube page several months before the Emmys were set to take place. CBS shared a “FYC” clip on Aug. 11, just about a month before this year’s ceremony is scheduled to go down. “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” received nine nominations — its most ever — at this year’s Emmy Awards, including one in the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series category.
