Neutrogena acknowledged Thursday that it made onetime spokesperson Hayden Panettiere “feel unsupported during a very difficult time.” Following the actor’s death on Sunday, a May interview resurfaced in which Panettiere said the cosmetics company fired her after she spoke about her postpartum depression. “We are deeply saddened by Hayden Panettiere’s passing,” Neutrogena wrote Thursday on Instagram. “For more than a decade, Hayden was a valued member of our Neutrogena community. We are proud to have partnered with her and understand that we made her feel unsupported during a very difficult time. This is not what Neutrogena stands for or who we want to be. Hayden’s courage in sharing her challenges helped inspire important conversations and awareness.” The skincare brand continued, saying it is making a “significant investment to a long-standing community health partner to help give more women access to the support they need, including care for postpartum depression” and will share more information when the “plans are in place.” “Out of respect for Hayden’s family and loved ones, we did not want to speak out so soon following her passing,” the statement read. “Everyone at Neutrogena extends their deepest condolences to Hayden’s family and all who loved her.” Neutrogena did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its specific plans. After Panettiere’s death was announced Sunday, the “Heroes” star’s May interview with podcaster Jay Shetty got renewed attention for her candor about the postpartum depression she experienced after giving birth to her daughter in 2014. She told Shetty that after she opened up about it on a 2015 episode of “Live With Kelly and Michael,” she said she got a call that Neutrogena wanted to fire her over it. She said her representative told the skincare company that to do so would be illegal. Panettiere said her representative “saved the day,” but she knew Neutrogena was not going to renew her contract for the next year. “I remember that really breaking my heart,” she told Shetty. Since Panettiere’s death, fans have flooded Neutrogena’s social media comments calling for a boycott of the skincare company. “So [Neutrogena] wanna tell us what’s wrong with [postpatrum] depression,” one comment with more than 35,000 likes reads. Neutrogena turned off the comments on its Thursday statement on Instagram. Before her death, Panettiere was vocal about experiencing postpartum depression. She told Shetty that after her daughter’s birth, she wasn’t connecting with her like she knew she should be and she was “full of stress and anxiety all the time.” “I knew something was just terribly, terribly wrong,” Panettiere said.
