A long-shot Democratic congressional candidate’s brawl at a Hawaii beach over the weekend has landed him behind bars. Kirill Basin, who is running for Congress in Hawaii’s 2nd district against incumbent Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii), appeared in court on Tuesday to face charges of first-degree terroristic threatening after an altercation at a South Kihei beach on Saturday, Hawaii News Now reported. According to the Maui Police Department, the incident reportedly began after a 61-year-old man asked Basin to turn down his music. Basin allegedly implied that he was armed with a gun and would shoot the man’s wife. A video of the encounter, which has gone viral on social media, shows Basin wielding a beach chair and attempting to swing it at a man before a bystander knocks him out. That bystander, identified only as Kama in the police report, told Hawaii News Now that he used his mixed martial arts training to subdue Basin. “I’m like, maybe I should intervene, and then as I got closer and closer, he was just getting more irate and violent and then saying stuff. ‘I’m going to hurt you,’ or ‘I can injure you’ or ‘You like scrap’ to the aunties,” Kama said. “He put his hands on me, and as soon as he tried to shove me, I hit him with a left and a right, and that’s when he stumbled and fell over the chairs,” Kama continued. Maui police told the outlet that Basin allegedly pulled a knife at one point during the altercation and threatened multiple people before throwing the weapon in the ocean. Basin, who has several prior arrests for assault is currently being held on a $1 million bond, according to court records. His attorney, Brandon Segal, told Hawaii News Now the bail amount was “outrageous.” “These are just allegations. My client has a presumption of innocence,” Segal said. The state’s primary elections are set for Aug. 8. By entering your email and clicking Sign Up, you're agreeing to let us send you customized marketing messages about us and our advertising partners.
