Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday offered up a promise to tackle fraud ― but some people found it pretty empty given who his boss is.

“I don’t care where you came from. I don’t care what your name is,” he told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. “If you are committing fraud against the American people, all of us, all of us in public leadership should be trying to stop it and try to throw you in prison for enriching yourself off of the American taxpayer.”

Vance’s critics immediately offered him one name to start with: President Donald Trump.

Since returning to office, the president has granted pardons and other forms of clemency to dozens of criminals convicted of fraud, money laundering and related crimes.

Trump has his own extensive history of fraud-related legal cases and civil judgments.

In 2024, for example, Trump was convicted of falsifying business records and, separately, was found liable in a civil case related to fraudulent business practices. Just two years earlier, the Trump Organization was found guilty of tax fraud and other crimes.

Trump in 2019 had to pay $2 million to eight charities after admitting to misusing funds raised by his Donald J. Trump Foundation, which was dissolved as part of the settlement. The previous year, the president agreed to pay $25 million to settle allegations of fraud by his Trump University, although he did not admit to any wrongdoing.

And since returning to the White House, Trump has earned staggering amounts of cash in schemes, including more than $1 billion from his crypto businesses that he collected while some 764,000 other crypto wallets suffered massive losses, according to The New York Times.

He’s even made a windfall by purchasing stocks in companies right before his administration announces favorable decisions for those firms.

In a scathing editorial published last month, The Wall Street Journal editorial board accused Trump and his family of “profiting off the presidency in ways that demean the office.”

Given that history, critics hit back at Vance with some reminders about whom he works for:

Vance’s boss, the president, has pardoned more than 70 fraudsters, some of whom defrauded people in the billions of dollars. https://t.co/IC0gS6ODRY

Said, without self awareness or irony, as Donald Trump tripled his wealth grifting off of the presidency over the last year and a half. https://t.co/8K4exo6bxc

THE LACK OF SELF AWARENESS about Trump & his gaggle of grifters is absolutely breathtaking. https://t.co/MMMd3xvMN7

The only way that this could be less self-aware is if Vance was condemning people married to women named Usha. https://t.co/wMsVJ25HYD

I’ve got a name for him: Donald Trump. https://t.co/xuHRXUnm1Z

Great! Start with your own boss and his sons.Trump made $2 billion in 2025, triple his prior year, with $1.4 billion from crypto ventures he personally set federal policy for. UAE's national security chief bought into his crypto company for $500 million, and $187 million… https://t.co/7uMGrksOdF
